Back in December of last year – I said this:
“Freedom. I want everything I do next year to contribute to increasing the freedom I have to do the things that are right for me and my family. The freedom to be who I am, to do what I am good at, and to provide for my family.” – Me, Dec. 2014
This was the prescription I wrote for myself.
I didn’t know how I would fill it, just that it needed to be filled. There were a few different things that came up that I thought might be it…but I was wrong. When I found out I was expecting another baby, the need to fill the prescription became more urgent. I still have that practical side of me that knows although babies themselves don’t take up a lot of resources, they do seem to prevent mamas from contributing financially as much as they might need or want to their growing family.
And then there was the conversation… the one I had with a co-worker a few weeks ago, another expectant mama, and we were talking about how various things were being affected by the crazed hormones we have running through our bodies. She’s been tired, so have I. She’s been hungry, so have I. My skin is alligator-like. Hers isn’t.
Wait a second. What is she doing that I’m not? Simple things, like putting lotion on her legs. I thought to myself – I don’t have time for that. She told me to make time, all it takes is 5 minutes. She was right. If I don’t have time for that, then I need to probably spend a whole hour putting lotion all over myself and reevaluate my life. Especially given I’m going to be 40 next year, and this is the only skin I’ve got.
Well, slather I did. Reevaluate…I did that too. And then, just as the Universe likes to do, it began sending me little messages via its preferred messenger service, Facebook. A friend of a friend was posting (quite frequently…perhaps the opposite of subliminally) about her Rodan + Fields (R + F) business.
If you’re not familiar, dermatologists Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields are the same doctors who created ProActiv®.
I knew that product worked because I used it…with good results, so despite the differences between that and R + F…I was even more intrigued.
They were having a special for the month of August for folks who wanted to become consultants. Of course, I was skeptical because let’s face it – I’m not a sales person, and I know how the world works… I’d have to sell, right? Still, I noticed myself being drawn to the things she was posting on her page. I lurked and investigated. Okay, I stalked her page, I admit it…and the pages of all of her friends who were also consultants. Busted! I saw lots of amazing things. Things that said, “Joy, you need to think about this and how it could help you…and others.”
Still, I was skeptical. So, I lurked and researched. Google helped me find a few other skeptics, but also many, many other happy consultants, and happy customers. I took it a step further and messaged her, saying I was skeptical and needed more info. We scheduled a phone call for the last day of the special for consultants. I liked what I heard, and was 95% there but I needed to have a chat with the Man. So, we chatted…and later that night I signed up!
I didn’t let negative thinking prevent me from saying, “Yes.” I thought about my goals for this year, and nothing could be better aligned with them. Something good for me and my family, where I could also help others fulfill their potential, and that might possibly bring in extra income?? I had to say a big, fat “Yes.”
I knew that being rejected (and maybe frequently) might be part of my journey with R+F, but then I thought about a concept I went over with some of my students this week in class…something that we can all apply to our lives when we take a risk, and worry that no one might support us, or that we’ll be rejected.
My prescription for freedom (not to mention good skin!) has been filled…and while some might not be interested in filling their own prescription of freedom and good health in this way, some will…and someone’s always waiting!
I’m now officially a Rodan + Fields skin consultant! I’ve started my “medicine” and so far I’m loving it! For me, with my sensitive, ruddy skin, the Rodan + Fields regimen I use is SOOTHE. It takes less than 6 minutes to accomplish, each morning and night. You’ve got 12 minutes a day to take care of you, right?
No joke, I’ve already seen (and can feel) an improvement, in my skin and in my attitude, because I’m caring for myself! I can’t wait to show you my Before and After photos, but what I’d really love to see are YOURS.
I’ll be talking to you more about my adventures with Rodan + Fields in the future, but for now, please drop me a line if you’re interested in the product…or the business! I’d be happy to talk to you about both.
Note: Right now, these products are available in the U.S. and Canada, and the links above are for U.S. customers only.
P.S. If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading! I promise this blog will not turn into all R +F, all the time. I still plan on keeping it real, and giving you my own 2 sense about everything going on in my life. Have a great Sunday 🙂
