B is for Barcelona

18 years ago yesterday, I left on a plane to study abroad in Italy.  My home for the next few months was the beautiful Tuscan town of Siena. While I was there, I explored nearly the entire boot…but today’s post isn’t about that. It’s about what I didn’t get to see while I was there – Spain.

It’s not that I didn’t get the opportunity to travel. I did. I saw London, I saw France (not too many people’s underpants…do you remember that silly children’s rhyme?), Switzerland, and Amsterdam.  They were all wonderful and it was the experience of a lifetime. Barcelona was very high on my list to visit, but when it came down to it, it was much too expensive to travel there. I had a Eurail Pass, but of course it did not extend to the Italian, nor French Rivieras…it cost more, and it was just money I did not have to spend at the time.

Okay, if I’m being honest, I didn’t have the money to do the travelling that I did either, but we all have our limits, don’t we? At the time, my Western European frontier was Paris – that was as far as I got.

When I returned, I even got a few travel books for Spain, intending on going back to Europe as soon as possible.  Of course, as with many of us, plans change, life happens and I never did make it to Barcelona.

Here it is, looking as pretty as the picture I never got to take…

Such a bother really…but…

I definitely want to go back to see Barcelona, the rest of Spain, and explore the rest of the places I didn’t get to see while I was there.  Perhaps “B” should have been for “bucket list”?

Stay tuned during the month of April to see what other subjects I want to explore…I’ll return to my senses on May 1.

I'm 42, a remarried mom of an 8 year old girl and a toddler son, a teacher, and a writer. People tell me I tend to be brutally honest and ...tell it like it is, so I had hoped to use this outlet to keep me sane while I got used to my new life as a stay-at-home Mom back when I was home with my daughter....it worked. And it's been therapeutic through the end of a marriage and the emergence of me...

  1. Oh, the memories of traveling! I have been to Barcelona, we stayed in Seville for 5 weeks one summer, and took a trip to Barcelona one day. As a child, I thought it was funny that stores would actually close during the afternoon – something foreign for a little German girl. We had a lot of fun! Thanks for reminding me!

  2. I’ve traveled a lot with my sister The Abbie (from http://www.theabbie.com) who is also doing the A to Z right now. Still, I haven’t been to Spain ever! The max memories I have concerning Spain are tasting a non alcoholic version of Sangria, haha! That too during a Cross Cultural Challenges in Business class!

  3. I’ve never been to Barcelona either, but I’d really love to especially after reading George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia. Some day!
