World Poetry Day 2015

Since it’s World Poetry Day, I wanted to share a longer form poem I wrote about a month ago for a contest (I did not win, in case you were wondering…) Relationships, whether they be parental, familial, or spousal are not always rainbows and roses. Sometimes they are difficult, dark and dank. But if you remain present, honest, and willing–those missed understandings can be resolved.

Missed Understanding

the tiniest words
cause unending despair
you seem often flippant
as I pull out my hair

a different agenda
is that why we quarrel?
or a different perspective
as we sit on our laurels

you’re afraid?
speak your mind, fine by me, cause a ruckus
being silent breeds anger, resentment, in buckets

repeating mistakes is never my goal
tiny actions can trigger black memories of old
something small in your eyes, in my heart causes waves
tired eyes can’t contain them, they spill out
I feel brave

for allowing the feelings
for working them through
for attempting to understand
why we’re both feeling blue

we promised we’d help to unpack our baggage
but at times tunnel vision forgets all the damage
becoming complacent will no doubt take its toll
but being content will soothe both of our souls

there’s only tonight
if I’m here, please be too
there’s only tonight
if you’re here, i’m with you
