My husband, often referred to as The Man, tends to get thoughtful gifts for me. They are the things I either truly want or need but would not get for myself for some reason. In that vein, one of my Christmas gifts this year was A Year With Rumi – Daily Readings by Coleman Barks.
If you’re unfamiliar with Rumi, he was a Persian poet alive in the oh-so-interesting 13th century. He was a scholar and a Sufi mystic.
Before I go to bed, I read a single poem and I always find something interesting in them, other than just the beauty of the language itself. A few nights ago, this quote was the beginning of the poem I read:
THERE is one thing in this world that you must never forget to do. If you forget everything else and not this, there’s nothing to worry about; but if you remember everything else and forget this, then you will have done nothing in your life. – Rumi
To me, the person who feels like she is constantly forgetting things… this was so timely to read. Even if I forget the little things…if I’m doing the one big thing I was born to do, then there is nothing to worry about.
I’ve said before I feel very strongly, know and believe that my life’s purpose is to help others fulfill their highest potential. That’s my one thing. I’m doing that in a myriad of ways, so I’m not worrying.
So that’s this Monday’s mindful moment – think about what your one thing is…see if you’re doing it, and once you realize you are – let the worries go!
Tell me, what’s your one thing?
