Today I am thankful for my kids – not the biological one, or even the ones who have become part of my family by choice and happenstance, though I am beyond grateful for them too. I’m talking about my students.
Being an educator can sometimes be burdensome to one’s own family, difficult, maddening and downright ridiculous. Most days though, my “kids” remind me that I do what I do for them.
Not for the pay, because it is meager.
Not for the glory, because there often is none.
But for the ways that they teach me about humanity, for the opportunity to help them grow, for the patience they require from me, and for showing me what I don’t know.
For all of these things and them, I am grateful.
